Description
Climate change is an atmospheric warming (or greenhouse) effect largely being caused by human activities that generate emissions of CO2 and other greenhouse gases. The City monitors greenhouse gas emissions to track Edmonton's contribution to climate change. Staff calculate Edmonton's greenhouse gas emissions using the Global Protocol for Community-Scale Greenhouse Gas Emission Inventories, which is an international standard that allows the Edmonton to be compared with other cities around the world. Edmonton's emissions are reported at a "Basic +" level, meaning that it includes emissions from: - Fuels burned to heat buildings (such as natural gas), - Fuels burned to run vehicles, trains, boats and airplanes, - The generation of electricity used to cool buildings, charge vehicles and run trains, and for all industrial, commercial and residential purposes, - The decomposition of waste at landfill sites, - Industrial processes and chemical use, and - Livestock and land. It also includes tracking the greenhouse gases that are absorbed by Edmonton's urban forest, river valley, wetlands, and other vegetated areas.
