        Measure Description

        Historical Missing Persons measures the number of outstanding historical missing persons in Edmonton. While EPS prioritizes locating missing persons when they first are reported missing, it is important to continually undertake available investigative tasks for those who are missing long-term (90+ days missing). Although EPS has fully exhausted investigative leads for a number of these historical missing person files, no unresolved file is ever closed; any new tips or leads to locate someone will be investigated.

        Historical Missing Person files are concluded when the missing person is located (alive or deceased) or new evidence suggests the missing person is in another policing jurisdiction - in which case investigative responsibility is transferred to the other policing jurisdiction. Statistics here also include files where human remains have been found by EPS, and have yet to be identified.

        What happens when someone goes missing?

        Anyone can report a person missing, and despite misconceptions, there is no time restrictions to report a missing person before EPS will respond to it. EPS responds to missing persons based on a risk assessment of the individual, covering areas such as: being a vulnerable age (under 12 or over 80), existing mental health or physical capacity concerns, suicide risk, or if circumstances are suspicious. Missing persons that met a high-risk threshold are immediately dispatched to patrol for investigation, and those below the threshold are forwarded for review by EPS's Missing Persons Unit.
